Pop-up Globe launches ‘Taking Flight’ national art competition for theatre’s new ceiling

Pop-up Globe is calling for young artists aged 18 and under to contribute to the theatre’s new roof by entering a competition to design and draw the NZ native birds that will adorn the beautifully painted ceiling.

The specially designed and engineered canvas ceiling will be installed in time for the theatre’s winter festival in July 2019, featuring a gorgeous ‘heavens’ design surrounded by NZ native birds flying up towards the sky.

Up to 50 illustrations by individual artists will be incorporated in the new ceiling’s design, with successful entrants and members of their families invited to a special ‘roof shout’ event in mid-July 2019 to celebrate the installation of the new roof with painted ceiling below.  In addition, four entries will be awarded prizes, with the winner receiving a $250 Pop-up Globe tickets voucher.

The successful entries and prize-winners will be selected by a panel of judges chaired by Pop-up Globe’s Head of Scenic Design Malcolm Dale.

The deadline for entries is 6pm on Monday 27 May. Entries must depict a NZ native bird of the artist’s choosing, shown in flight. Entries must be in full colour, drawn or painted on a white A4 sheet, without any background illustration.

Entries may be posted to Pop-up Globe Taking Flight competition, ℅ Pop-up Globe, PO BOX 6280, Wellesley Street, Auckland 1141, or emailed to hello@popupglobe.co.nz with the subject line Taking Flight. All entries should include the artist’s name, age, and a contact email address. Please note that no entries will be returned, that entries may be scaled or adjusted for practical purposes, that the judge’s decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the judge’s selections.
